Stirling Engine Optimization

Pro Engineer

The 3D modelling and engineering drawings for the engine were produced on PTC - Pro Engineer Wildfire 4, a computer aided design (CAD) package.  It was the logical choice for the group as all members had used the software before and were comfortable with its capabilities.

Pro Engineer allows each component of the engine to be modelled in 3D.  Part drawings were also created within Pro Engineer to increase accuracy at the draft stage and allow the designs to be submitted to the workshop in accordance with the correct standards (British drawing standards PP 7308).  The use of Pro Engineer also allowed the design to be altered with ease when new design concepts were being developed.

A further advantage of Pro Engineer was the ability to create an animation of the Stirling engine components assembling from an exploded view.  This allows an examination inside the design which eases the understanding of the engines operation while increasing the focus of individual components as the assembly process unfolds.
